When homeowners think about solar system troubleshooting, they often imagine a failed inverter, a bad solar panel, or some other piece of specialized equipment. In practice, one of the most common service issues we encounter at Rivertown Solar has nothing to do with the solar equipment itself: the system has simply lost its internet connection.
We see this across virtually every manufacturer. Whether a system uses Enphase, SolarEdge, APsystems, SMA, EG4, or another platform, modern solar and battery systems rely heavily on an internet connection for monitoring and remote diagnostics.
And unfortunately, the homeowner's internet network is often the least reliable part of the entire monitoring system.
Why Solar Systems Keep Losing Their Internet Connection
Solar equipment is designed to remain installed for decades. Your home internet network isn't.
During the life of a solar system, homeowners may:
- Replace their router or modem
- Change internet providers
- Change the Wi-Fi network name or password
- Install a mesh Wi-Fi system
- Move networking equipment to another part of the house
- Replace a failed router
- Change firewall or security settings
- Experience an internet provider outage
- Lose power to a router, extender, or communications gateway
Any of these can disconnect the solar monitoring equipment.
Wi-Fi introduces another problem: signal strength changes. An inverter or communications gateway may be installed in a basement, garage, utility room, or on the exterior of a building. A Wi-Fi connection that worked when the system was installed can become unreliable after a router is moved, furniture is rearranged, new equipment is installed, or the home's network configuration changes.
Some solar equipment also communicates only over certain Wi-Fi frequencies or has more limited wireless capabilities than a phone or laptop. The homeowner may therefore have excellent Wi-Fi on their phone while the solar monitoring gateway struggles to stay connected.
The Solar System May Still Be Producing Power
One important distinction is that losing internet connectivity does not necessarily mean the solar system has stopped producing electricity.
In many systems, the internet connection primarily allows information to travel from the solar equipment to the manufacturer's monitoring platform. If that connection disappears, the equipment may continue operating normally while the monitoring app shows the system as offline or stops displaying new production data.
The problem is that once monitoring disappears, neither the homeowner nor Rivertown Solar can easily see what the system is doing remotely.
That turns what might otherwise be a quick remote diagnosis into a troubleshooting visit.
Why This Happens Regardless of Manufacturer
Every solar manufacturer approaches communications somewhat differently, but they all face the same basic problem.
The manufacturer controls the inverter, gateway, ECU, battery controller, or monitoring device. They do not control the homeowner's router, Wi-Fi network, internet provider, or network configuration.
That means even exceptionally reliable solar hardware can appear to have a problem because the communications link between the equipment and the internet has failed.
After servicing systems from many manufacturers, we've found that communications problems are one of the few issues that consistently appear across nearly every equipment platform.
For that reason, Rivertown Solar has increasingly taken an Ethernet-first approach to system communications.
Why Rivertown Solar Prefers Ethernet
Whenever the equipment and building layout allow it, we prefer to establish a hardwired Ethernet connection between the solar communications equipment and the home's network.
Instead of asking the inverter or monitoring gateway to communicate with a router wirelessly, we run a physical network cable to the router or network switch.
It is a simple change that can eliminate an entire category of potential problems.
A hardwired Ethernet connection:
- Doesn't depend on Wi-Fi signal strength
- Doesn't care how far the equipment is from a wireless access point
- Isn't affected by interference from walls or other wireless devices
- Is generally more stable over long periods
- Makes communications problems easier to diagnose
- Reduces unnecessary service visits
- Gives our technicians more reliable remote access to system performance data
Ethernet cannot prevent an internet provider outage or a router failure, but it removes the wireless connection itself as a potential point of failure.
For equipment expected to operate for 20–30 years, we think that is an important distinction.
Designing for Serviceability, Not Just Installation Day
There is a tendency in solar to think about communications as a small final step during installation: connect the system to Wi-Fi, verify that the monitoring portal works, and move on.
At Rivertown Solar, we think about what happens five, ten, or fifteen years later.
A solar system isn't just something we install. It is an electrical system that needs to remain understandable and serviceable throughout its operating life.
Reliable communications allow us to see production, identify error codes, review operating conditions, and in many cases begin troubleshooting before a technician ever arrives at the property.
The more reliable that connection is, the better we can support the system.
That is why, when a practical Ethernet connection is available, Rivertown Solar would rather run the wire.
Wi-Fi is convenient.
Ethernet is infrastructure.
For a piece of equipment designed to sit on your home for decades, we believe infrastructure is usually the better choice.
